While pursuing a BA in Creative Writing, students study literary texts and then produce their own poetry or fiction. This major is perfect for those who love to write poems or stories, and who plan to do so no matter what.
In addition to the required five courses in poetry or fiction writing, students must take five courses in English Literature or English Language in a Global Context.
Students choosing this option must have the approval of the creative writing advisor.
Important: Due to the high number of applications for the creative writing workshops, the Department cannot guarantee acceptance into the three workshops required for this program.
Students may not declare the Creative Writing Concentration in their chosen genre.
English Creative Writing Major
Enrollment in any creative writing workshop is by application only.
You may apply to more than one workshop, but you must inform each instructor that you are doing so.
Professors post lists of those students accepted into the workshops in the English Main Office (149 Kaplan).
While some creative writing students attend graduate school to hone their skills and develop their art, others practice their craft in commercial industries like marketing or publishing.
Ultimately, creative writers learn many skills that employers find desirable.
