Per la terza e forse ultima volta il Festival Verdi sceglie il Teatro Farnese per allestire un'opera di Verdi, ma a parte l'exploit di Graham Vick che l'anno scorso aveva utilizzato in maniera geniale gli spazi straordinari della sala lignea all'interno del Palazzo della Pilotta per il suo Stiffelio, gli altri registi si sono dimostrati intimoriti dall'ambiente e non ne hanno sfruttato le peculiarità.

Non fa eccezione neppure Robert Wilson a cui viene affidata la messa in scena di questo Trouvère: il pubblico siede nella parte bassa della sala, l'azione avviene sul piccolo palcoscenico e le gradinate rimangono vuote, inutilizzate.
