While James II was king, in 1688, Increase was sent as the representative of the colonists to thank him for his declaration of liberty to all faiths.

He remained in England for several years, and, on the accession of William and Mary in 1689, he obtained from them the removal of the hated governor of Massachusetts, Sir William Phipps.

Increase’s petition for the restoration of the old charter proved unsuccessful, but he was able to get a new charter in 1691.

Both the new governor and the new charter, however, turned out to be unpopular.

Before an assembly of freemen, Increase proclaimed that an affirmative vote would be a sin against God, for only to him should one give absolute obedience.

The colonists refused submission, and the charter was subsequently revoked in 1686.

In 1685 Increase had been made president of Harvard, but he resigned in 1701, in part because of opposition to the new colonial charter.

He received the honorary degree of doctor of divinity in the same year.

While Mather's diary entries are concerned, in large part, with devotional matters, the manuscripts of his writings and correspondence indicate the breadth of his wide-ranging interests, including education, history, politics, and science.

Extracts of the Cotton Mather diaries were published in the of the Massachusetts Historical Society (ser. 7-8), and the American Antiquarian Society has published a number of the Increase Mather manuscripts from the Mather family papers in the American Antiquarian Society The bulk of the Mather family papers at the American Antiquarian Society, of which the Increase Mather papers form one of five major subdivisions, were purchased from Hannah Mather Crocker (1752-1829), the great-granddaughter of Increase Mather, by Isaiah Thomas and donated to the American Antiquarian Society by Thomas in 1814. The Increase Mather papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society consist of gifts of individual items, including those from Elizabeth Belknap, 1858, Sarah Louisa Byles, 1881, and Matt B. For the present edition, Increase Mather materials from other collections at the Massachusetts Historical Society have been inserted chronologically, by type, to form a complete file of all Increase Mather manuscripts held by the MHS. This collection is indexed under the following headings in ABIGAIL, the online catalog of the Massachusetts Historical Society.
